SARDINIA

Sardinia (1,650,000 inhabitants), the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is a place full of charm and extraordinarily seductive.

Its ancient history (more than 4000 years old) tells us about civilization and mysterious people; the ruins of these ancient civilizations tell a story unique in the Mediterranean: 7,000 Nuraghi(large cone-shaped stone towers built from before 1000 BC ( for example: Barumini Nuraghe Mereu), 2500 Domus De Janas (small prehistoric tombs carved into rock), 350 tombs of the Giants (so-called because of their colossal dimensions), hundreds of Dolmens and Menhirs (very ancient sacred stones), archaeological sites (e.g. Tiscali) and, more recently, the remains of the Carthaginian, Greek and Roman civilizations.

Sardinia’sS Sardinia’s landscapes are extraordinarily colorful and nature has been here preserved, intact as it was thousands of years ago. Fauna is very diverse: deer, fallow deer, mouflons, sheep, wild boars, foxes, flamingos, eagles, hawks, horses wild etc. Marine fauna is also extraordinarily vast.

1900 kilometers of coastline and pristine sea of many colors and shades: colors: blue-green, green, emerald, blue, green, turquoise, blue, turquoise, transparent etc; fine sands can be white, golden, pink, red.

The Sardinians are known for their kindness and hospitality, and in 2013 won the award by the Italian Confesercenti as the Italian region kindest to tourists. Values include warmly treasuring family and friendship.

Every year, Sardinia is awarded by the Naturalistic Association recognized by the Italian Ministry for the Environment for the purity of its sea and is often described by the International Tour Operators as the "Caribbean of the Mediterranean" because of its sea.

Vine and olive groves emerge from ground paprika-colored soil, resting on the plains and low hills, forests of cork oak, pine, oak and chestnut soaked in the scent of Mediterranean vegetation of wild myrtle, juniper, lavender, rosemary, berries, mastic, strawberry and much more. High mountains embellish the landscapes.

Tourists who come to Sardinia meets many different environments so as to make it difficult just direct them to the sea:

One of the largest open-air museums from prehistory to modern days, land of legends and mysteries fairies , goblins and witches; canyons ( e.g. Su Gorroppu) and breathtaking views, caves of a thousand colors. It will be difficult to chose whether to get lost in the multi-colored sea beaches, or spend time with water sports of all kinds, or rather go on a trip in the Supramonte mountains and visit the archaeological sites.

Or whether to go shopping in the boutiques and high fashion shops in Costa Smeralda , Cagliari (the ‘door’ of Sardinia), Alghero and Olbia

The famous cuisine includes genuine seafood, fish entrees, fish eggs, pasta dishes topped with tuna roe or sauce of fresh lobster; or earth products (mountain ham or boar starters, local salami and sausages, Malloreddus semolina pasta topped with sausage sauces, and ravioli filled with ricotta and cheese), and grill-roasted pig, lamb or beef. A typical Sardinian dessert menu is the Sebada - dough stuffed with cheese, fried and served hot with honey and cakes of all kinds. Meals often end with all sort of fruits.

Besides , this is the region of Italy where the greatest amount and variety of cheese is produced, including the Pecorino Sardo and Pecorino Romano. A unique experience is the taste of Sardinian cheese roasted on the fire, and that of melt cheese spread on leaf (Carasau)bread

The wines and local spirits (for example: Mirto e Fileferru, a very strong liquor ) are so many that tourists never struggle to find the ones they like. Sardinian wines are exported and sold all over the world, and have often received national and international awards.

Besides the Sardinian cuisine, also classic Italian cuisine is present everywhere. In the cities also international cuisine is easily found.

With all that’s been said here, one could expect an island with a huge number of tourists and a chaotic or stressful life in Summer. Instead, the crowds of tourists are still contained and, although several million Italian or foreigners can be around from May to October (and there is also a winter tourism for mountain hikers ) and use international airports and seaports, Sardinia has not become, like the tourist can see, a place full of buildings or skyscrapers overlooking the sea. No, that kind of tourism is not really the one to be found in the Sardinian land!

The crime rate is very low.

The truth is that Sardinian environment, way of life, remote country paths and multi-colored limpid sea remain unknown to most tourists that have not yet even heard of the island, which has remained intact as if it did not really want a lot of publicity, or …maybe the fairies on the island are somehow there to protect it all the time.

Did you know that…..

…you can see entire communities of pink flamingoes (phoenicopterus roseus) in the Cagliari lagoon, behind the Poetto beach? Surprisingly, a 1000 of these beautiful birds had arrived in 90s, choosing the lagoon for breeding. They remained there since, growing more and more in number, and experts have now counted 6000-8000 couples..

and that...

…Every year (and already since a long time) the Sardinia Region Council takes legal actions against certain tour operators, cities, regions and even countries that ‘borrow’ pictures of the Sardinian sea and coast for publicity to promote their own beaches. In fact, Sardinian sea and beaches have ended everywhere: in Spain, Caspian Sea, Tunisia, USA, Turkey and even Argentina! The money obtained from such legal battles, is reinvested in the economy of the Sardinian region.
